Founded in 1905, the Australian Open has become one of the four major tennis tournaments of the ATP calendar and the first Grand Slam of the year. The event is played on outdoor hard courts (Plexicushion) and has a total prize money of around 23,140,000 Australian dollars. This year’s money prizes should be 3% higher that in 2010.

FRANCESCA Schiavone’s dogged run through the Australian Open continued last night with a 6-4 1-6 16-14 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova in what was the longest women’s grand slam match of all-time.
Schiavone came from a set down in her first round win against Arantxa Parra Santonja, before winning the third set of her second round match with Rebecca Marino 9-7.
But this one takes the cake as the No.6 seed saved six match points on her way to a win which took four hours and 44 minutes to complete.
The new record eclipses the old mark of four hours and 19 minutes set by Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova and Regina Kulikova at last year’s Australian Open.Schiavone and Kuznetsova traded the first two sets in what was an encounter laced with unforced errors.
But then all hell broke lose to transform what was a largely forgettable match in to one of the greatest of all time.
The pair traded early breaks in the final set before serve held sway.Kuznetsova was the first to blink when she had three match points on the Schiavone serve at 8-7 but squandered them all as a result of two unforced errors and one brilliant winner from the Italian.
